Chic meets Sex Pistols
[posted12/15/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy - I was wondering which one song has the band recorded in their career that most
closely matches John/Nick's original concept for the band that they should be "a cross between
Chic & the Sex Pistols" ? Damian
'Sound Of Thunder'
(they agree!)

[posted11/11/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy and DD, I was watching the Astronaut Live @ Wembley DVD, and it showed some
behind the scenes footage of the boys in Wembley. There is a part in the DVD where John and
Andy look like they are drunk...anyway, John starts yelling 'HEY FRANK YEH FRANK! OH
SHUT UP FRANK!' I was just wondering who Frank is, curiosity is one of my weaknesses,
Thanks for taking time to reply, Laura
“It's a “Blue Velvet” reference…Andy is inhaling oxygen, so
that's the connection. No one was drunk. JT”

John Met Dave
[posted10/25/2005U.S.A.]
Hi John - On the 1997 Roxy music tribute album you co-produced I am curious to know how
your collaboration with Dave Gahan came into being. Looking forward to the show in
December. Regards, Marc
“Got to know Dave whilst he was living in LA.. Knew he was a
Roxy fan...he chose 'Song For Europe'.

JT on the Ballad
[posted10/1/2005U.S.A.]
Dear Katy, On muchmoremusic they had a BIO on Duran Duran. There was a clip of John
Taylor when he had left the band and was saying his contribution to the song Ordinary World
was that it was to slow and did not want to get caught up in the ballad. I was wondering if he still
feels that way today when they perform that song on stage and how does he feel about ballads
at all. Just wondering. Thank you, Sandra
“No- I love it! And that was a stupid thing to say anyway, said in a
moment of low self esteem... JT

Bass in the SUNRISE vid
[posted9/15/2005U.S.A.]
Dear Katy, Could you find out from John the type of bass played in the Sunrise Video. I think it
a gretsch, which kind/model i don't know. is it in the JT arsenal or just on loan. Scott
“It was a loaner.. Gretsch.. chosen for it's looks...JT

Advice for the Young at
Heart
[posted9/4/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, This is directed to John...John if you could go back in time and meet yourself in your
early to mid 20's what two pieces of advice would you share with the younger you and do you
think you would listen? Regards, Cito
“Boy that's a tricky one...  Don't ever lose your enthusiasm and
don't ever underestimate the value of it.You are unique. Try not
to compare yourself to others.  How 'bout dat? JT
Ambition
[posted8/12/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, Just want to let all the guys know how much I love the Astronaut album. Am loving
the cyber-sex feel to all of the tunes! John, just wondering if your parents were supportive of
you becoming a "rock star." I know you and Nick were the founder of Duran. Did it all just fall
into place? Jessica-USA
“Yeah parents were pretty supportive, I didn't have to rebel too
much against them.. they gave me a year after flunking art
school to try and make a career in music work. It wasn't easy for
them at that time, my Dad just had taken early retirement. A
year doesn't seem like a lot, but boy, at that age, when you are as
ambitious as Nick and I were, it was just enough. JT
Do They Get Sick of...
[posted7/25/2005U.S.A.]
Hi DD, question for John... after seeing the Band's live interview on Muchmoremusic
(Toronto), and reading an earlier interview you did with a Seattle paper, I was wondering if you
and the others are getting tired of anwering what are basically the same questions each time you
do interviews since you've been back together (e.g., what's it like to be back together? is it as
much fun now as it was 20 years ago? Compare the Band in 1984 and 2004, etc... etc... etc...)
DOUG
“Yes Doug, we definitely do. JT”

JT & BG
[posted6/18/2005U.S.A.]
Hi John, In Boy George's autobiography 'take it like a man,' Boy George tells a hilarious story
of when at the height of your fame you both lived in the same apartment building in New York
and you unexpectedly called on Boy George to play some Power Station demos one evening.
Boy George tells the story that Marilyn was there at the time and they put on a gay porno
movie that made you  blush. Do you have any recollections of this incident? Regards Marc
“No, not that specific one. I remember my girlfriend at the time
coming home to find that a tray of what looked like cocaine left
outside our front door. That took some explaining! How crazy is
that though? Out of all the apartment buildings in New York
City, BG and I end up on the same floor (28), in the same
building. That was some party year! JT
Subliminal New Moon?
[posted6/11/2005U.S.A.]
Dear Katy, The following questionhas been bothering me for 20 years: At the end of the "New
Moon On Monday" video during the line "firedance through the night" why does John andthen
Nick holdhis hand up as if to indicate the number five? Thanks, Betsy Killinger-Kraft
THEY WOULD LIKE TO SAY IT WAS A SECRET MESSAGE SENT TO A SMALL
GROUP OF PYGMIE ALIENS AT AN AZTEC TEMPLE IN THE AMAZON
JUNGLE (NICK MADE THAT UP!)…HOWEVER, JT AND NICK SAY YOU MAY
BE OVERTHINKING IT… IT MEANT NOTHING!
PLAY THE F***ING
BASS JOHN
[posted6/3/2005U.S.A.]
"PLAY THE F***ING BASS JOHN"???I was at last night's show and when the band was being
introduced and it came time for John, Simon kept repeating it and so did the crowd.
I vaguely remember the story behind it ( I know that Simon said it to him during a show some
time ago, right?). Can you give me the whole story behind it? Steve
“Steve, No big story, it's just an evolving ad lib thing...JT

John and John Shanks
[posted5/30/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, I was fortunate enough to see the reunited band perform in Dallas back in 2003 and
again a couple of weeks ago. They were wonderful, and John really seemed to enjoy himself,
which made me smile. I have a question for John: John Shanks won a Grammy this year for
Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical for producing work by artists like Sheryl Crow and Alanis
Morissette. Is this the same John Shanks who worked with John on his solo CDs? Thanks. Ivey
“ Yes it is. JT

SAP Guitar
[posted4/20/2005U.S.A.]
Dear Katy, Firstly I would like to say how much I am looking forward to getting my hands on a
copy of the new album and would like to wish the guys every success with it. Now to my
question: In the video for Save a Prayer, John is seen playing the acoustic guitar. I would just
like to know if he actually played the guitar on the track or whether it was just for the video?
Kind regards, Sophia
“just on the video…John”

JT likes MY OWN WAY
[posted3/25/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, This question is for John Did the band ever play Live the original version of My Own
Way also thanks for a great gig in Belfast and thanks to you and all the band for taking time to
speak to me and my seven year old daughter sarah in the hotel lobby just before the show she is
now a big fan like her old man Cheers, Gerard
“You're welcome.. Not since we first wrote the song have we
played it live in the style of the single. Subsequent to the release
of the 'Rio' album we always played it live the way it is on the
album. Funnily enough it's the one song- single- that no one
seems interested in playing now. When I was touring with
Terroristen and singing one or two Duran songs, I always played
it, it seemed relevant to going solo... Best, JT
Backing Vocals on...
[posted3/25/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy. This is a question for Andy or John. Who sang background vocals on the acoustic
version of the chauffer on the singles 81-85 CD? Also did Andy sing backup on American
Science? Henry Herrera
HI HENRY. IT WAS SIMON AND ANDY ON "THE CHAUFFEUR" AND JUST
SIMON ON "AMERICAN SCIENCE."
Since you are all asking...

I just saw the show in Louisville yesterday. Loved every moment of it. I would like to ask John
what was written on the bottom of the kilt he was wearing. All I could make out was BL.
Thanks for the great show! Patricia

MYSTERY!). THE KILT SAYS "BLOODY LUXURY"
Anyone Out there Bass
[posted3/22/2005U.S.A.]
So, Anyone Out There is one my favourite basslines to play, but i was wondering about the
recording of that song. is it slightly slowed down? because if my guitars are all tuned, they sound
slightly off on that track, but the rest on the album sound fine? thanks Mark
“Danger! Danger! Will Robinson.. Trainspotter question!.. well,
Mark, I know the song sounds as fresh today as the day it was
baked, but in actual fact it's TWENTY FOUR years ago since we
recorded it. So- in answer to your query, I would say, I don't
remember, but it is possible. John
JT's Technology
[posted3/20/2005U.S.A.]
Hi, I had the opportunity to see the band in Vegas last week. They rocked!! It was worth every
dime. I do have a question for John. How do you feel technology has changed the music world,
and how do you keep up with the changes? I noticed that Nick uses a computer on his
keyboards. Is there any new technology that you incorporate within your work? Thanks! Kris
“Kris- Not really. The rig I am using is really not so different
from what I had out in '84. Four strings on the bass (except for
when I use the Five string), very well built state of the art
electronics on those Peavey guitars- very happy with them- the
Peavey backline, again, state of the art- but nothing 'sci-fi' about
it; pedal board, just a box that links to half a dozen stomp boxes
housed in my amp rack located behind the speaker cabinets.
That Vaseline though, I wish I had that back in '84, I could have
avoided all those blisters!!  Thanks for your interest, JT
John's Bass
[posted3/5/2005U.S.A.]
Katy, This is a question for John. John, I just finished watching the video for "What happens
tomorrow". Great flick! The bass you are using looks like a Gibson Les Paul. Was this bass
custom built for you by Gibson Guitars? Thanks, John Kodet Nashville, Tennessee
“No- it was gifted to me by Gibson. Apparently it once belonged
to Los Lobos. J”

Extra Loud
[posted3/1/2005U.S.A.]
This is a question for John. I listened to the recording of the Radio 2 show at Hammersmith,
and oh my god you guys were ON FIRE! I am really sad I couldn't get a ticket. Anyway, the bass
seemed to be turned up much more than when I saw you at Wembley last year and certainly
more than on the mix of Astronaut. Is this true, or just an effect of the difference between
sitting in a certain position at Wembley and listening to a live recording on headphones? I
loved being able to hear those funky basslines more distinctly. Please come to Barcelona soon!
Thanks, Hilary
“Hammersmith was extra double triple LOUD!!!.. I don't know if
I can get away with that every night!! Love, John

A Necklace, A Story
[posted2/16/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy! I was at the Tampa show this past weekend and noticed that John was wearing a
necklace, but then after the power outage (!) Andy was wearing it. Is there a story behind this??
Thank you! mes2003
“aha.. not quite so.. the one I was wearing, (which was a Birthday
present from the band two years ago, by Hermes) I usually wear
on my wrist. I tried it around my neck but it was bugging me, too
tight. At the first opportunity to take it off, I did. Andy, as it
happened, already was wearing his, I guess he unbuttoned his
shirt during the outage and it became more noticeable. Good
eyesight!! JT
Choosing the Bass
[posted2/14/2005U.S.A.]
Dear John, Hi, I am a 22 year-old girl from Italy and first of all I want to thank you and the
band for giving us such a great new work that is Astronaut, I love the album, it is brilliant! I am
a fan of yours, and like you, I also started playing the bass when I was 16. I learnt to play the
piano and keyboards when I was 11 and started writing lyrics at that age but then my love for
the rhythmic section have led me to play the bass (and be the singer ) in a band. The question
is: how come you chose to learn to play the bass which is such a deep-emotion instrument? Did
it happen by chance or was it a choice that you made? What are the feelings that this
instrument inspires you when you play it on stage, or when you are on your own or when
making a new record ... ? Kisses, Alessandra
“I quite fancied being a lead guitar player at first  (I thought they
got all the girls, ha ha!)..  but switched to bass after I met Roger. I
really liked the idea of building an interesting, funky rhythm
section. No one was doing that at the time, it was all punk rock,
which is more of a guitarist's music. JT

PS Art
[posted1/4/2005U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, This question is for John: In the Power Station album, liner notes, it lists you as
responsible for the cover art.Is this so?If it is, are you also responsible for the various posters
and single sleeves? However, if you are not the artist, who is? Thanks Nikki
“The inspiration (ie; who we ripped off) is credited no? Montxo
Algora, I believe was his name, although I may have misspelled
it. We had the man himself do the artwork for 'Murderess'.

[posted12/24/2004U.S.A.]
Hi John, are you still endorsing for an Italian bass amplification company?? We were extremely
proud to know you appreciate one of our national products! Would you consider doing clinics
around? Ciao, Federica
“i was using Mark for a while, and I would recommend their
products, but currently I am using all Peavey backline equipment
(and really digging it)...
I would not really want to do any clinics.  John
Know it All Bass
[posted11/15/2004U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, Duran Duran I have just bought the Single “RUFTS” and on hearing the b side “Know

a bass line played with an effect pedal? Kind Regards, Richard Henwood

A question for John - John where you on the cover of a Duran Duran 12 inch single in the early
80's...(just your picture)?? Some people said New Religion but wasn't sure there was a single to
that song. The photo was in the 1984 calendar. Blue, black and white background?? Thanks

Type of Bass in SUNRISE
[posted10/24/2004U.S.A.]
Hi Katy - This question is for john - What type of bass is it that you are using in the (reach
up for the) sunrise video? Thanks a lot for answering my question regards, Lee
It's a Gretsch.. a four string. Which is an act, as the bass on the
recording is a five. John”
RIO building

Dear Katy, this one's for you: On the back cover of the Rio album there's a picture of building ?
What building is it & where is it at ? Any particular reason why the band chose it? The booklet
centerfold shows a picture of the band on top of a building, is the same building ? I know I weird
question, but I'm curious. Thank you. Rui Portugal
It was in London.. it may have been Centre Point.. but I can't be
sure. Sorry! It was some time ago!! JT”
Thoughts of Hong Kong
[posted9/18/2004U.S.A.]
Just seen the pics of you guys doing promo in Hong Kong, and you look like you're having a lot
of fun! I've always loved the islands and was wondering what your impressions of the place
were... When was the last time you visited Hong Kong? Have you found it has changed much in
the 7 years since it reverted to Chinese rule? Sarah
“It's hard to form any deep impression, being in HK for about 36
hours only. Also, we stayed on Kowloon for the first time. I guess
I would say that not too much has changed. Perhaps a little less
evidence of the Queen and the British Empire. The island is
certainly thriving and the food.. ah! Nick said he thought the
food the best we had anywhere on our travels, and I would not
disagree. The architecture is obviously, stunning. There really is
nowhere like it, and just thinking about it, as I write this, I'm
looking forward to our next visit, playing a concert there
sometime in '05. JT”
Don't look back
[posted8/26/2004U.S.A.]
Hi katy, I remember clearly that I read back in 1986 an article (not sure if it was in “star hits
magazine”) where John Taylor told that they had recorded two new songs for the new
album(Notorious) and the names of those songs were “American Science” and “Don't look
back”. So can you or John tell us why they never put “Don't look back” in the album nor in the
B side of one of the singles??? Thanks and love, Joel
“I was misquoted. 'Don't Look Back' was written at the time of
'Wild Boys', but never finished. We may well dig it up one of
these days. J”
jt in «she-bat»
[posted8/17/2004U.S.A.]
John, I was flipping through the short-film channel we have here in Toronto, Canada and they
were playing this little sci-fi flick called “She-Bat” - I just about fell off my chair when I saw
you playing Patrick - wow, you were totally cool and your end title song was great too. Can you
tell us the story behind that one? I went to the Internet Movie Database and it's great to see
how you've supported indie filmmakers. Any interest in directing a film one day? Or maybe
direct a video? Mark
“The producer approached me and asked to me help out. I was
happy to. It was a few days work and further experience in the
acting realm. He asked to use one of my songs in the end credits,
I seem to remember, vaguely.. I'm glad you enjoyed it. John ”
Hurst Street mystery
[posted8/12/2004U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, First of all, I would like to thank all of the guys for a most fantastic concert at the
Birmingham NEC Arena, way back in April 2004. It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion and
one of the most memorable. I was quite impressed by a couple of Duranies from Italy who were
visiting Birmingham for the first time ever. They were very keen to see the places where Duran
Duran have originated from. I was able to tell them about the Rum Runner as I used to work
next door at the car dealer in 1979. But they were also asking about 76 Hurst Street,
Birmingham. Apparently, there is a connection between this address and Duran Duran. I know
that Toyah had a clothes shop near there around 1980. The whole area was totally different in
those days. It would be really interesting to know the exact story. Many thanks.
NICK:                    John will remember better than I, but it could be the
address of Khan and Belle, the store where much of the early clothing was
acquired.
JT:                         I am not sure. That address could have been
Rockers, which was a record store that also became our first “fan
club” where we received mail.”
ANDY:         Well, I am not even FROM Birmingham like those two but
I think it was this trendy wine bar place called HOSTERIA.
I don't think either of them are right!
John on bootlegs
(last time!)
[posted7/29/2004U.S.A.]
Dear JT, I know I've read a few times you use to collect bootlegs of your favorite groups and
still do. What are your feelings about this small group of “fans” that skim eBay for possible
Duran Duran bootlegs? Apparently, they've made it their mission to keep boots out of the
manyfans hands that want them. Mostly compilations of TV appearances from the 80's and
90's.They think anyone who sells boots. Are stealing from Duran's pockets. They just don't get
the fact that this would only be true if they were out selling copies of official CD, DVDs, etc. A
live show, or compilations that have never been released on CD/DVD, etc. isn't competing with
the band at all, it's only keeping fans interested in the year(s) break between albums. Thanks!
AVTAK69
“If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times. I'm not precious
about bootlegs. The biggest drawback is when a really stinky
performance, (such as the Prince's Trust Concert in London '84,
immortalized as 'Di's Big Date) becomes readily available. Today
it seems pretty much anything and everything shows up on some
form of bootleg. Instead of tapes, which never seemed as bona
fide as vinyl, anyone can produce a CD. JT”
other drummers for JT
[posted7/23/2004U.S.A.]
This question is for John: I can recall in the past that you mentioned how crucial the
relationship between the bass and drums was in getting a groove down. Being that Roger is the
isualize drummer, it is obvious how well you two work together. My question is, was it difficult
to adjust to other drummers following Roger's initial departure in 1986? And can you explain
what it was like to play together again after such a long absence? Thank you for so many years
of great music...and please tour Canada soon (Montreal needs you!!) Best Wishes, Joe
“I was lucky to play with some really fabulous drummers in lieu
of Roger, especially Steve Ferrone and Tony Thompson. Both of
them certainly helped to present my playing in a strong golden
light. However, in a personal sense, Roger and I are two peas out
of the same pod, (You could say the same for all the original
Durans,) and that similarity of experience, growing up, our
exposure to music and culture, means so much. When we are
writing or recording a new song, we are both usually going after
the same prize, and on stage, we are a strong source of energy
and humour to each other. JT ”
john's side of things
[posted7/20/2004U.S.A.]
At the April concerts At Wembley, my friend and I I help noticing that John rarely plays over
to the left hand side of the set during the concert (his left), and when he did, despite ample
encouragement from the crowd (both of us in particular, much to our own  isualizees), he I step
out onto the catwalk bit (apparently, according to another friend of mine, this often happens
at DD Concerts - those on the left only get to see Simon, Andy and Nick, understandably Roger
can't really move around much!).  I got to thinking (as you do on a dull Friday afternoon), Is
there a technical reason for this (Is this 'cos his bass guitar goes out of radio range or
something?) or is it for more sinister reasons (eg fear of attack by rampant 30 something fans!)
or is John just not comfortable playing on the left!!!?  Emma (wasting valuable work time in
Southampton)
“Sound does have a lot to do with it. The left hand side of the
stage is Andy world, and it's like walking through a whirlwind.
Simon is OK as he wears in ear monitors, but I don't get much
bass over there. J”
JT's thoughts on Sydney
[posted7/2/2004U.S.A.]
Dear Katy, I went to all the band's gigs in Sydney last year. Last year was truly exciting for all
Durannies. Thanks for 3 memorable nights in Sydney and for dedicating Ordinary World to
Michael Hutchence- we all miss him, INXS has never been the same without him. My question
is for John, the architecture buff: Compared to the last time you were in Sydney, what, in your
mind, stands out as the most outstanding physical change in the urban fabric? Thanks, SimLo
“Aw gee.. that's tough. My perspective has changed so much since
I last visited Sydney. Staying down on the Rocks, under the
bridge, as opposed to the Sebel Town House, up near Kings Cross.
What a difference!! Instead of bars and porn shops, the deep blue
bay and the green of the surrounding headland. The air! Ah.. it's
beautiful down there! One thing had not changed. I loved Sydney
the first time I went there, and I love it now.
G'day Mateys!! JT”
Velvet Revolver
[posted6/24/2004U.S.A.]
Hi Great news about the record deal and can't wait to hear the new album. What do think about
the rock supergroup Velvet Revolver? After having played with Matt and Duff in the neurotic
outsiders and the fact that Scott Weiland is a duran fan? Regards, Marc
“Have not heard the record, but I like all the talent involved. JT”
D'ya think…
[posted6/23/2004U.S.A.]
I went to 2 concerts in the UK in April, & was completely blown away that my teenage heroes
were still just that! My question really is aimed at John - at the Cardiff concert, as the band
members were introduced near the end of the show, a different riff was played for each one.
When it was time to introduce Simon, you all broke into “Do You Think I'm Sexy”. Simon said
something like “Thanks Guys” & started strutting around the stage, which was hilarious, & you
seemed to still be laughing well into the next song. Did Simon know you were going to play
that? Is there a story behind it? Thanx, Rachel
Ps - love the DD tattoo on your right arm - I now have a small
replica of it on my foot!  “Well it was Lord Andrew that started to
play 'Sexy'.. I don't think he planned it, it just came into his
head.. .Simon's response to it cracked me up, he just looked at us
laughing and said 'Fuck off!!” but with a smile on his face. We
always had a good time at the band intro section, I mean you
have to, you cannot take yourself too seriously at that point...JT”
JT's bass collection
[posted6/17/2004U.S.A.]
Hi, my name is Jamie. I was at the 17th april M.E.N gig, and it was fabulous, wanted to see
duran duran for years ever sincei head the wedding album when I was 8. I loved John's heavy
funky bass lines. Sadly none of my bass guitars give that sound (I use a steinberger xp 25 and
bass collection sb301). So I was curious to what basses john was using at the M.E.N arena in
April. One looked like a isual and another like a peavey. Thanks I, Jamie Hill
“On the UK tour I used a new Aria, a new Peavey 5 string, an old
Fender precision fretless, and sometimes the Music Man that
Bernard Edwards gave me. J”
jt claps twice
[posted6/5/2004U.S.A.]
question for john please! On your solo record RESUME there's a track called 'TELL ME ALL
YOU KNOW' which contains the exact clapping beat used in ALL SHE WANTS IS, was it
yours or Elias' idea? Thanx isualize
“Is it EXACTLY the same? Phew! You're some trainspotter! It
was probably mine. It's a house-y clap groove, probably a
descendant of the clap groove line begun in 1976 with 'Car wash'.

a lesson!
[posted6/3/2004U.S.A.]
Dear John (through Katy), I am 12 years old, I went to see Duran Duran at the NEC on the
first night you played there. I was blown away ! After seeing you play Bass Guitar as well as you
can. I have started to teach myself how to play. My cousin has given me his old Vester bass and
I try to play along to songs like...Planet Earth and Skin Trade. But I can't quite get the hang of
it. I've already played electic guitar for 5 years and I thought this would be just as easy....I was
wrong. Please could you give me some advice. Lots of love, Danni. Xxx
“well Danni, those are two wildly different songs to try and play.
'Planet Earth' is pretty simple, as long as you use a plectrum, the
changes are easy once you get the 'galloping' rhythm. 'Skin
Trade' is a bit trickier, and I play it with my fingers. Like
anything, practice makes possible. I'm not one for flogging a
dead horse, the best way to learn anything is to have fun doing it.
If there is no one you know that you can bully into playing
drums along with you, then invest in a cheap rhythm generator-
there are lots of them, that you can plug into your sound system
or cheap amplifier. I can play along with grooves for hours, but
playing alone is no fun at all.”
the bet….
[posted6/2/2004U.S.A.]
Hi, Katy. I have a very trivial question that's been bugging me for nearly 20 years now.
During the time that the band filmed the video for A View To A Kill, there was a rumor
circulating that John and Simon had a bet as to who would be the first to get married.
Supposedly, the loser had to shave his hair and dye it black. Given the timing of Simon's new
'do' in the AVTAK video and his recent wedding to Yasmin, was there any truth to this rumor?
Thanks! - Curious in Cali
“well let's see.. we may have been complete and utter losers by
that point in our lives, but that bet? Never! JT”

was wondering if the original is an oil painting, what the approx. dimensions are and if any of
the band members own it. I have also spotted the hidden picture of John and it looks as though
someone was painted over it. I'm assuming it was altered after he left?? Thanks, Shaun

Hi Katy-This question is for John. There is a debate on the message board between a few of us
concerning your shirt in the 'Nightboat' video. Some of us think it says, “Denny's” and others
think it says, “Jenny's”. Are either of these correct? Or does it say something totally different?
Curiously awaiting your response so we can put this to rest. Cheers! ~ TammyD2

jt self taught?
[posted5/11/2004U.S.A.]
Hi John! I'm a 35 year old bass player that started playing the bass because of you. I spent
countless hours in my room trying to figure out the licks to songs like New Religion and Late
Bar. By listening to them and then figuring the bass lines out I became a very funky bassist! My
question to you is how did you learn all the snapping and popping you used so much on your
earlier bass lines? I know you emulated bands like Chic... are you more or less self-taught?
Thanks for all the cool bass lines!! Bob
“More or less! Actually, I'm entirely self taught. I don't think I
ever had any sort of tuition for bass. I remember once joining a
class for double bass at UCLA in Los Angeles, but couldn't deal
with carrying the darn thing. Bass is a pretty fundamental
instrument. It's not like the guitar or piano where there are so
many inversions and isualizees. It's possible to be a good bass
player just through instinct alone. It's a much a mind set as
anything. Holding down the bottom while other instrumentalists
show off!  I've found on this recent tour that the most important
sound for me in the mix is the snare drum. It's the clock that
always brings me back to the here and now. I'm learning all the
time, and I'm not afraid to ask. I'm always asking Andy, can I
play F while you play that D chord? (or whatever).. Fortunately
my instincts are pretty good, I find I can trust them usually. I'm
sure you will find you can do the same. JT”

This one is obviously for Andy or John: I saw Power Station's performance at Live Aid
recently. One of the VJs says before the band starts to play that Power Station had been
rehearsing a song for Live Aid that they weren't playing on their tour at the same time. They
didn't wind up playing it. But can either Andy or John remember what song that was? Thanks,

Hi Katy, I was wondering if any of the band listen to their past recordings for pleasure, rather
than work? If so, which albums do they listen to? I'm sure they don't need to be told yet again
but the tour was fantastic, thank you. Regards, Mandy
Hi Mandy - They had to listen to all their past music in
preparation for choosing songs for this tour...however I am not
sure that they often listened to their own stuff for pleasure
ibefore the tour - though JT has been known to indulge a bit!
They DID all comment how well they found that their music

I am Mark from Malta. I don't know if I'm making a good judgement or not, but the beginning
of 'I Don't Want Your Love' that Duran Duran are playing live right now sounds like 'She Can
Rock It' by The Power Station. Am I right? Also I would like to thank John and Nick for giving
importance to one of the smallest countries in the world and spared sometime before the
concert of the 14
th April and gave an interview to a friend of mine that works as a DJ on a
local radio station. We were a group of 50, and according to Nick that's a good percentage
considering were we are from.(So that makes me one of the best Duran Duran fans around the
world considering the collection I have!!)I attended the 13
th of April show as well, VIP
package and I have to congratulate all the band for such wonderful shows they put on. I really
enjoyed them. Hope that next year I would be able to attend again when they start another
World Tour. Unfortunately I wasn't able to meet the band but the fact that I was at the front of
the stage, was a dream fulfilled. Mark

Dear Katy, I'm sure John is growing weary of answering questions about his old natty 80s shirts,
but… Was the red and black sweatshirt he wore during the Band Aid  recording/video session
ever offered as tour or fan club merchandise?I'm only asking, because I've come across a shirt,
somewhat recently, that bears an uncanny resemblance to the one in the video.PS - Had a great

Hi Katy, this is a question for John & Andy I'm sure it was not done before. They may know
about a ten-chords instrument called a “stick”, which is a mix of bass and guitar. I want to ask
them 1) if they have ever played it, 2) if anyone of them are asked to play it, who will play it
and in which one of the historic songs would they use it. Hoping to see you very soon in
Southamerica. Thanks in advance. Sergio from Argentina.

[posted2/27/2004U.S.A.]
For most fans, “New Religion” is I one of the all time greatest DD songs. Everyone's
contribution (vocals, drums, guitars, and keyboards)is I. Even so, John provides the heart and
soul of the song with his bass. My request is for John: Could you give a little background on how
this classic came into being and do you have any significant memories regarding the song? Hope
it is still on the 2004 setlist! Thanks. Lamar
“Hi Lamar I'm afraid I have no specific memories of writing it-
other than us wanting to combine something lean and groovy
with something Pink Floyd-y progressive. It's a great song to play
live, and we always enjoy it. It takes the show to another level
when we do it, I think, it seems to move us away from being only
a singles band. Hopefully it will be staying in the show for the
UK tour.  John”
history lesson
[posted2/12/2004U.S.A.]
Hey Katy, this one's for John: As he is a huge Beatles fan, I wonder what he thinks of Paul
McCartney's decision last year when he changed the credits for some of the Beatles song into
McArtney/Lennon while the original credits were printed in the other order, causing quite some
unrest among the fans (and isualize even Ringo Starr). In contrast I can remember having read
that John once said DD never give out individual credits as for who wrote what song, referring
to a question if he came up with the idea for Drowning Man (btw of which I'm still convinced
he did write!). Geoffrey Belgium, Europe
“As far as 'Yesterday' is concerned, Paul can have it! I never
liked the song and I don't believe that John did either. The 'Let it
Be' reissue? Well, it's typical of the exploitative nature of the
industry. If I could, there are a couple of albums I've worked on
that I would re-arrange or re-mix if I could. I don't blame Macca
for that. Finally, the lesson is. Regarding history.
He who survives, gets to write it. John”

Powderfinger
[posted12/18/2003U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, Firstly a compliment to the band - wow what a song - I heard Sunrise for the first time
last night and I can't get it out of my head! I absolutely LOVE it!!! It has the feel of the Duran
songs we all know and love but still a modern touch to it. It's funny because my favourite
Powderfinger song at the moment is called Sunsets! So I have a few questions for the boys. Is
Sunrise on the setlist for Brisbane or Enmore in Sydney? Because I know I'm going to just go
crazy if I get to hear it live! And secondly, do they know of the Australian band called
Powderfinger? They did a great version of The Chauffeur on Duran Duran Undone and they're
also my second favourite band in the world! Bernard Fanning (the lead singer) has said a few
times that Duran were the first concert he ever went to at Festival Hall in Brisbane in the 80's.
Powderfinger are actually touring Sydney the same weekend as Duran Duran. They're at the
Entertainment Centre on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th. I was able to swap my Friday night
ticket with another PF fan for a Saturday night ticket so that I could get my VIP ticket to the
Enmore to see Duran (which means I'll be missing them at Robbie - but happy to not miss PF) -
have to share the fan love around lol.  I'm so excited that it's just about to happen. Would love
to hear your thoughts boys. Maria
“That's good to hear. I understand that they are one of the most
successful Aussie bands right now- I'll check them out. Don't
know if 'Sunrise' will be on the setlist. It certainly won't be on
the Robbie shows, but possibly when we do our own shows. Either
way we will be playing some new material if not that particular
one, so I'm sure you'll hear something new you like.  There is a
version of 'Sunrise' on an upcoming album release- the
soundtrack for the TV series 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy',
which EMI are releasing in February. It's a techno remix by
Jason Nevins which is a little different from our live version, but
it's very exciting. Look out for it.  John”

This question is for John or any member of the band who'd like to clear this one for me.
Speaking at the Q Awards John Taylor said: "We still haven't been signed. There is some
interest but it is not as easy as we might have expected. We have got an album of material
written but we realise that we might only end up getting to put one single out". So my question
is - whats up with the record deal at the moment and do we fans really have to face with the
fact that we only get to hear one single and no album after all??? Thanks so much. Ivar from
Estonia
“Basically, I never said that. There is no doubt in my mind that
DD will be releasing an album of new material sometime next
year, so keep your hair on, Ivar!  - JT ”

[posted8/1/2003U.S.A.]
This will be the first time that i have been able to see the fab five in concert. When i was
younger i missed you all in the prime, however I have followed Duran Duran throught the years.
The question i have for John is this. During your early 80's years you played a Aria Pro 11 SB
1000 in black, and while during the Nororious album, you played a Phillip Kubicki. I have both
of those guitars, and i was wondering what your going to be playing on tour, and which one of
those you liked better? I have the Phillip Kubicki signed by Phil himself and he asked me to
find during the Big Thing album he custom made a bass for you to look like the album. What
ever happend to it, did you ever get to play with it? Jason
“At the start of rehearsals I had five guitars i was going to use.
The Aria, (which is new, as Aria Japan just recently got back in
business), The Kubicki, my Steinberger, my Music Man which
used to belong to Bernard Edwards, and a new Firebird hybrid
that James Knopp built for me. As time passed I realised I didn't
want to be changing guitars every song or so, and the Aria was
playing so consistently, I decided to stay with it for the whole set,
excepting one song 'What Happens Tomorrow', on which I play
Bernard's bass.  John”

JT, I've read in a couple of interviews with you that you were very upset by Simon and Nick's
decision to use the remix of "Drug" on "Big Thing," instead of the original recording. Do you
still feel the same way? I think "Big Thing" is a good album, but to me, "Drug" is the low point.
What are your feelings about the album now? Thanks, Austin
“absolutely, and both Simon and Nick agree with me now. One
day we will hopefully replace the horrendous remix with the
original version (which can be found on the B side of 'Do You
Believe in Shame' and on the Japanese version of the album. JT”

I'm an avid fan of John's approach to bass playing and because of that, took up the instrument
about nineteen years ago and subsequently learned all his lines. I also have a bass signed by him
but sadly wasn't able to meet him when it was done. I was wondering if it is a common thing for
him to hear...that his fans have adopted his style of playing and learned his lines. He has, in
fact, been a very affecting absentee mentor. Hope you're able to tell him that. Much love and
respect, Traci
“That's very kind of you to say so, the compliment is appreciated.
When I hear the bass lines of my idols, Bernard Edwards, James

Katy, I was wondering if the song "We Need You" was written during the sessions for the
Notorious album. It is such a different sounding song than anything on Notorious. Perhaps one
of the group members could explain exactly how that song came about, and perhaps why it
didn't make it onto the album. Thanks. Scott
“'We Need You' was a late night 'moment' while taking a break
from the 'Notorious' album at Air studios in London. the guitar
riff (for want of a better word) was mine, i forget where the title
phrase came from, it was an easy match to the music, and LeBon
filled in the dots pretty darn quick. We were all aware of the
similarities to the Rolling Stones' 'We Love You'. The Notorious
album was a tough one to make, with Nick, Simon and myself
sort of making it up as we went along, trying to reinvent the band
without Roger, and not knowing at if Andy was going to stay with
us. Steve Ferrone helped out at first, then Nile later. (Warren's
audition was 'American Science'.)  But 'We Need You' is just the
three of us, which makes it perhaps the purest song of that
season. JT”

switching to bass
[posted4/23/2003U.S.A.]
Hi Katy, This question is for John, my all time hero. John: In the early years of  Duran Duran,
you used to be the guitar player. What made you switch to bass guitar, despite being totally
gifted in composing sublime basslines ? Cheers, Rui
“At the time, in Birmingham, all the cool kids wanted to play
guitar, no one was interested in playing bass. After Roger joined,
Nick, Roger, myself, and our then singer Andy Wickett recorded
our first demo's. This was the first incarnation of the 'funky'
Duran Duran. Up to that point, we'd had a darker, more
atmospheric lean (and that's putting it politely). I really enjoyed
making the demo's, and I played both bass and guitar on them. I
appreciated that Roger and I could start building a strong rythmn
section that would help shape the band's sound, and a guitar
player would come to us. That man would be Alan Curtis, who
played with us until we started working with the Rum Runner, at
which point he left, to be replaced by His Royal Highness Sir
Andrew Of Taylor (no relation), several months later.”

With the up and coming tour, have you and the rest of DD decided on the ratio between how
much new Duran will be played in combination with the old Duran? I mean you guys have so
many hits, what is the process of choosing what you are going to play? Will it mostly be the
new and some old, or are there so many older songs the fans want to hear that it will be more
50/50? I think the anticipation of what song is going to be played next is a major element in
the appeal of a live show. At any rate, I can't wait for the album, and the tour and I will travel
across the world if I have to, to see the show! Good Luck! - Suzette
“Well, we don't have a specific ratio figured out, but I would
think it's gotta be more old songs than 50% - there are just too
many of them that have to be played, plus a couple of obscure
less obvious ones (my favourite being 'Shadows On Your Side). It
sure will be fun to work it all out though. JT”.

this question is for john taylor: Its very apparent that the great bassist Bernard Edwards was a
true influence on your style in many ways in as muchas the entire entity of Chic and Nile
Rodgers on the band. Most admirably, during the Arena tours you played Good Times as your
solo introduction at the end of Girls on Film. His surprise death must have caused shock to you
and the rest of the group. Did Bernard actually teach you how to disco? How did you end up
withMr. Edwards Musicman? Would you play with Chic if they were to ask you to fill in on a
tour with them? el comadante
“It was Bernard's sound thatreally drew me to bass. 'Good
Times','Everybody Dance' etc.. it alerted me to the possibility that
playing bass could be as cool, maybe even cooler, than playing
lead- which was what I was trying to do at the time. Meeting and
playing with Roger was all the further motivation I needed, and
we set our hearts and minds on creating a fully functional
rhythm section. Of course Bernard's death saddened me, it still
does. The Music Man he gave me as a gift, just simply being nice..

I think more people age 30 or over arelikely to get into it than

bobbing my head. Easy! What do the guys do? Do they think/say:
A. "Awwww no, not again."
B. "Who's playing brilliantly on that killer track? Oh right, its me."
C. "I still wish Nile had used the 2nd take, not the 12th."
D. "After all this time, I still get a rush when people blast our tracks!"

“I think it's really all down to the material. I think that if we get
the new material right then we're going to appeal to a whole new
audience. If we go with the pure reunion/nostalgic trip, then it's
going to be about the fans from the 80s, and that could be fun too.
My expectations are that it's going to be a good thing, and so far
that's what it's been proved to be. Whenever we get together and

Dear Katy, I've been a fan since 1981 and first saw them in 1982 (so after you've counted on
your fingers that adds up to - ye gads! - 20 years!) my questions for the band are: 1- about the
first time I saw them: it was at the Dr Pepper Pier 42 summer concerts in NY in 1982 - I've
still got the pictures! Can you remember what day it was exactly? All I can remember is that it
was around John's birthday. 2 - What are they listening to now? Thanks Conchita
I ASKED JOHN “ Hey Conchita Wasn't it a weekend? Like a

someone out there can confirm this one way or the other. Right
now I'm listening to my 'MetaFour' CD, but most of the time I
can't stay away from the new Duran material. It really is pretty
sensational, if I say so myself. It captures entirely the essence of
the band at the beginning, but it's hip and driving. Very exciting!

Hi Katy! Please pass this one on to the guys... I just finished watching a "Behind the Scenes"
show on the Mtv Unplugged series. Many of the performers said how it was very scary being
"stripped down" and being so close to the audience. Since you were known for being a mainly
"electric band", did you have reservations of going acoustic? And was it scary being so close to
the crowd, as some of the other performers mentioned? Thanks!! Susan, aka Dazzleland
“I've never been a great acoustic player, and I tend toward
electric music over acoustic, so on 'unplugged' style
performances I always feel a little out of my element. However,
it's important, I think, to be able to perform convincingly with
and without electricity, which is why I did a number of solo
acoustic and/sidewalk performances when I left the band. The
MTV 'unplugged' was quite electric however and a lot of fun. JT”

Hi John, what is your opinion of unreleased songs being surfaced by bootleggers? There is a

love the idea. And JT, it would be awesome to hear you sing in the new DD album, JUST 1

john's influenced by...
[posted9/11/2002U.S.A.]
John has said that he was influenced by funk bands such as Chic and it is evident in much of his
work, such as the Notorious and Power Station stuff. Being a George Clinton, Bootsy Collins
and Brothers Johnson fan myself, I wondered if there were any other funk artists that
influenced him? Were these artists ever big in the UK? Dana
“Chic was the first band I listened to and wanted to play that
way. I remember hearing motown and the Philly soul growing up
and kind of liking it but not relating to it the same way as I was
relating to my 'rockers' - as I was able to relate to the artists
more. There's a lot of funk artists that have been influential to
me. The one that's jumping out for me more recently is Public
Enemy's 'Fear of a Black Planet' album. That's a hugely
influential album. And Bernard Edwards, he was my bass idol
and still is. He and James Jamerson are the two most important
electric bass players that ever lived in my opinion.”

A question for John....many many years ago when I used to live in the UK, I remember reading
an article in Smash Hits sometime in 1984 about Ozzy Osbourne saying that he liked Duran's
music and that he thought John Taylor was his favorite bassist at the time. To me, I thought
this was a little strange for Ozzy to say, as I thought he would comment on 'head-banging metal
bands', but Ozzy being Ozzy, I guess you never can tell! John, are you or have been an Ozzy

Nigels... and I wasn't about to become the first one.”
john's opinion
[posted8/18/2002U.S.A.]
John, I recall that when duran's last single, "Someone Else Not Me," was released, you said it
had all the proper ingredients for a hit song. Are you concerned at all, considering today's
dismal (chart) music climate that your new effort will not be warmly embraced by top 40 radio?
Does chart success still matter to you? And regardless, I will be lined up, the day it is released.
Thank you! Chris
“Frankly Chris, I think that song was not a hit because the video
was absolutely wrong- but that's only my opinion. Of course we
hope our new record finds love at radio and people buy it in
droves, but right now all we're concerned with is making an
album we all feel good about, and that we can all enjoy.”

john's thoughts on some
duran releases
[posted7/31/2002U.S.A.]
JT: How do you "really" feel about the DD albums -- "Big Thing," "Liberty," "Wedding Album"
(yes even that one), and "Thank You?" A lot of us, old true D2 fans think there are some great
songs on them, but overall, they are average. Does he cringe while looking at their tacky cover
art? Why did they go towards tacky art on them? They really distract from the music, I feel.
-ROB

“I'd have to take those one by one. 'Big Thing' for the most part
I'm pretty pleased with. I feel that we were kind of up against it
at the time, and we delivered something that had a sort of
cohesion to it. Although anybody that knows me knows that I was
very upset that the remix of “Drug” was put on the record. If you
really want to hear the album as it was meant to be, you should
check out the Japanese version, which has the original “Drug”. A
lot of work was put into that track and that, to me, is the
complete album. Tacky cover art on 'Big Thing'... yeah, I guess,
but it was fun at the time. Moving along to 'Liberty'... it had the
makings of a great album when we were writing and rehearsing
it. I really feel it could have been great, but we just took too
many wrong turns. It wasn't a great time for me personally, I
wasn't showing up, I wasn't committed to the making of the
album. Now the cover art - there's one bad ass (in a negative
way!) record cover. I'm with you on that one... terrible. The
'Wedding Album' I think's an important Duran album. I'm
pleased with it because it sort of introduced us to another
audience. I love the artwork on that, very Robert Rauschenberg
influenced. It's my second favorite Duran cover. 'Thank You'
wasn't successful on any level really - except for maybe the cover,
which I think is beautiful. The wrong songs... I haven't listened to
it lately, but having said that I think “White Lines" and “Perfect
Day” are two of the best recordings that the later band made. JT”

Might not be the best place to ask this but it's worth a try. I heard 'T42' (nice double entendre

has a bass line and synth parts very reminiscent of Tubeway Army's/Gary Numan's 'Are friends

a complete coincidence? Best wishes and success with DD 2.0

Hey, JT! I have been a Duran Duran fan since the eighties. Over the years, we have watched
music evolve and take on a new genre as its mainstream. What do you think of the RnB/Hip
Hop/Rap revolution? It seems that everyone is collaborating with rappers and other hip hop
artists. Do you see any of this in Duran Duran's future? And lastly, what type of audience will
you be targeting? P.S. It is good to see all of you together again! Baby D
John answers: “Yeah, it's possible. We did that hook-up with
Melle Mel and Grandmaster Flash on "White Lines". It's very
possible, but I don't think it's essential. If the right
collaboration/suggestion came along then, yeah, I'd be up for
trying it. As for target audience, I would say anybody that likes
good quality popular music because that's what we're trying to
make - a great album of classic pop. ”

FAGAOL is a nod to Exile, or if perhaps I'm just being obtuse ;) Christy S
“I don't think I consciously did it as a nod, but 'Exile on Main
Street' is one of my favorite album covers. In fact just last
summer I got a copy of it on vinyl again. It really is a tremendous
package, Robert Frank's photographs... it's got to be one of my all

"Some Like It Hot" video was actually a man who had a sex-change operation? I was watching
20/20 a few years ago an she was on there discussing her so called "Change of life-styles". I had
a feeling you did because of the shaving cream on her face. Thanks and we're ALL Looking
forward to see you again in Houston, TX... Love, Anthi (BlossomTX)
JOHN SAYS: “yes it's true.. I felt she had the right body for the

jt's fave football team
[posted6/10/2002U.S.A.]
I was wondering if you could clear up something for me? On your site there is a picture of you
and Simon at Old Trafford (I'll forgive you!). I've just been surfing the Official Chelsea Web site
as my favourite player is there now (Frank Lampard), and I discovered that you are listed under
Celebrity Chelsea fans. To say I was surprised was an understatement. So John, are you a
Chelsea fan or has Simon taken you to the dark side? (and that is meant as a joke!!) With love,
Amanda
“I don't quite know how that happened, but I am on that list, and
my daughter - who is a Chelsea fan - is quite pleased about it. I
like anybody that plays well... you know, if music were a little
more like football, just because you like one band doesn't mean
you can't like another... I love Man United because they've got so
many cool, colorful players, but I just like to see a good game
well played.”

[posted6/6/2002U.S.A.]
A question for JT... I recall the video "All She Wants Is" opens with you, Nick, and Simon
eating. When the picture-window turns to night-time, your band-mates have finished their meal
although you continue "eating". Please, >was there some humour behind this that you'd let me
in on? Best wishes, Alan
“I'm sure there was, but without looking at it I'll be darned if I

jt singing lead?
[posted6/6/2002U.S.A.]
Hi, This question is for John: Is there any chance on the upcoming album/tour that you will
share the lead vocal spotlight with Simon, or do you prefer to let that position up to him?
You've got a great voice too!! Luv to all the guys, Jan
“thanks, but unless I end up singing lead on one of the new
songs (which is highly unlikely), I don't think it would be
appropriate for any one other than SLB to take lead vocal duties
at the Duran show. I'm sure I'll play again solo, sometime after
this project is over, so look out for that and thanks for the
encouragement! JT”

[posted5/31/2002U.S.A.]
I just read on the DD.com board your response to a fan that brought to your attention
comment you had made about never wanting to do a reunion tour. How do you feel about
having to watch everything you say and do even after all of these years? Melinda
JT SAYS: “No, I don't really feel that, nobody says you can't
change your mind. That's the important thing - I changed my
mind. That, to me, just means that I'm fluid, flexible, open... as
opposed to somebody that's fixed and goes through life feeling
the same way about things as they did when they were teenagers.
I'm very changable, I listen to different music today than when I
was a teenager, I read different things, I have a different level of
appreciation. So it's entirely understandable that I might change
my mind about something like that. It became important to me to
get those guys back in my life again, to spend time with them
again. That's my primary motivation for this. I keep saying if it
fell apart tomorrow, I'd be glad we've gotten this far, and I need
to keep that in mind throughout. ”
save a prayer memories
[posted5/30/2002U.S.A.]
I've always wondered about how Save a Prayer was written. Two things which stand out in all
the years which I've loved and listened to the song wasthe opening sequence and the melodic
bass line.Where was it written? Did the lyrics come after the song? And who and what started
the musical idea--( i.e was John working on the bass line on his own first?? or was Nick on the
keyboard one day playing the sequence?? ) I know it was written many years ago. But I
remember what a brilliant piece of work it was and still is....Lucio,Toronto Canada
“What I remember about that day is arriving at our rehearsal
room at the Rum Runner, Andy playing chords to Nicks
keyboard- I think he was already playing the flute-y lead part.
Roger and I sat into the chords and the groove wrote itself. Nick
& Andy spent considerable timegetting the sequence part right, I
can't remember Simon coming up with his melody- but we
'demo-ed' the song at Bob Lamb's studio, which we did with a
number of the 'Rio' songs. Most of our first album had been
recorded with Bob atone time or another, s
o we decided to do it again.
the way to travel
[posted5/24/2002U.S.A.]
John, which is your favourite way of transport while on tour? Do you prefer travelling by bus,
train, plane? ISABEL
JT ANSWERS: “Personally, I like plane travel, I like train travel,
and I like buses. I would have to say if economics weren't an
issue, I would have my own private lear jet! But I'm prepared to
make compromises, and if I have to I would travel on a bus, which
I never did when I was yound, but I've come to really kind of
enjoy it. But I like hotels too... I like travelling... I like touring...
it's just as well I'm a musician really isn't it? ”

Hi John, I have read that you are an avid reader, and I have two questions for you.1) Have you

Twistysis
John says: “I've always liked reading. I've always liked kind of
adventure, escapist stuff when I was growing up. I still like that,
but I also like stuff that's a bit more thoughtful, and I like
history... At the moment I'm reading Ian McEwan's new novel
['Atonement']. I've got one of the 'Flashman' books by George
MacDonald Fraser for the next long flight, and that's kind of
adventure, tongue in cheek, historic - so it's all the kinds of
things I like really.”
deadsy and jt
[posted5/19/2002U.S.A.]
Dear Katy, In the liner notes of the latest album by Deadsy, I noticed that a John Taylor is
credited for playing bass on the song, "She Likes Big Words."Since Deadsy derives its sound
quite obviously from early Duran Duran and other new wave influences, it seems likely that JT
may have beenrecruited to contribute to the group's album. Can you confirm this? Also, what
does the band think of the upcropping of new groups whose sound is heavily influenced by
Duran Duran and other pioneers from the 80s? Will this make new fans of music listeners who
are too young to have grown upwith the band but who "rediscover" DD's early work through its
influences on new artists, or could it be lost on the ears of today's youth? Thanks! I eagerly
await the new album and tour. With love and appreciation for the band, Pamela P. in PA
“Deadsy asked me to play on their album and I was happy to
oblige. The band and their producer Josh Abraham were keen
fans of the early DDsound and wanted me to play in a way I had
not done in quite a while. It was fun. The way that I can best
answer the 'influence' question is to say that I am happy to be a
part of the great everlasting continuum that is contemporary
popular music. It's nice to be an influence on other musicians. I
certainly wouldn't be here without the tremendous influence
exerted on me by the likes of Beatles, Bowie and Sex Pistols.
Love, John”

Hi Katy...I met a man a couple of years back who claimed that he was once a chef at the Rum

alligator sandwich, and make it snappy!' :-) . Is this at all true? Also, are there any plans to ever
re-release Sing Blue Silver, the video documentary? By the way, thanks for over 20 years of
wonderful music and being a part of our lives. Stephen & Carolyn, near Newcastle, UK.
I CAN ANSWER THE PART ABOUT “SING BLUE SILVER” -
THERE ARE NO PLANS TO RE-RELEASE IT AT THIS TIME. NOW

Being a habitant of Europe, Holland actually, I wonder if living in the USA requires and forces
you to live a total different way of living and thinking? That is pretty much the idea we have
here about America and I wonder how you feel about that having lived at both ends? Karin
JT: “I guess living in the USA has changed my thinking because
when I go back to England and I sit down with the other guys in
Duran Duran and we talk about music and business, I definitaly
have a very different take to all of them. America is a very
different society, and I've really just started in the last couple of
years to get back in touch with England and the feeling of society
over there. I'm learning to balance out the feelings that belong to
the place that I live and the feelings that belong to the country
that I'm from. It's all very interesting stuff!”
first shows
[posted4/26/2002U.S.A.]
I've seen several places that the first "Duran Duran" show (with Nick Bates, Nigel Taylor, and
Stephen Duffy) was at the Lecture Theatre, Birmingham Polytechnic University on April 5,
1978. Most sources say the first official show with the classic five-member line up was the
Edinburgh Summer Festival on July 5, 1980, but I've seen a few that suggest that the first one
was at the Rum Runner. I assume they did plenty of rehearsals at the club, but what do the guys
consider their first official show? If it was at the Rum Runner, can you provide a date? Also,
most people consider Live Aid on July 13, 1985 the last time the five appeared together.
However, I found a tidbit/rumor that mentions that Nick, Simon and Roger appeared at end of a
Power Station show (East Rutherford, New Jersey on August 28, 1985) "playing" backup horns
for John, Andy and the band. Can you confirm whether this really happened? (And if so, does
anyone recall the venue?) Catherine
JT: “It was at the Rum Runner (first show with the classic 5), I
think it was around July 9th. I think in the scrapbook [on TTP]
we've got a ticket. It was either June or July of that year (1980),
and it wasn't in Edinburgh, it was Birmingham. We never played
the Edinburgh Festival actually. And, yes, the Lecture Theatre
was the first time Nick, Steve Duffy, Simon Colley and I played,
which was the first Duran Duran gig. The last show was Live Aid
definitaly. And I think the only person that came onstage with
the Power Station in New Jersey was Nick, who came and
jammed on broom. Very Dada of him I thought.”

legendary art rock band King Crimson. How did you come to rediscover this great album, and has
King Crimson's music influenced you in any way? Would also love to know if you have a
favorite track on Red. Thanks!! Krista
“I remember the album coming out, but never really being a fan
I stayed away from it- On a BBC special on progressive rock last
year they mentioned that 'Red' had been a favourite of Kurt
Cobain's. That intrigued me. I bought it, and fell in love with it-
it's an edgy, punky record, but so beautiful and melodic at the
same time. I was so happy to discover it, better late than never.”

A question for John : I think there are some stuff from yours past-solo-career, as well as Andy's

you","better way" and "night train", ""tremblin" or "broken window", wich has so much
duran-typical-sound inside. what do you think about? Camylo, Naples.
“It's very unlikely we'll be dipping into the solo catalogues, but

2 questions for JT
[posted4/8/2002U.S.A.]
Hi John, 2 questions hopefully you can answer: 1) After you left the band in '97, did you miss
Nick as you two go back so far? 2) Does music credibility matter to you? Kevin
JT SEZ: “Obviously Nick and I have been partners in crime since
we were very young. I'm always happier when Nick's in my life.
It's very easy for us to plug in, we know what the other is
thinking. But you do get out of somebody's life, especially when
you live on the other side of the globe from each other. I enjoy
the company, and when we're together we have a good time. As
far as press credibility... well, the problem with the music press
is it does matter. If you get the right review in 'Rolling Stone'
(particularly 'Rolling Stone'), it can really make a difference to
the success of your album. I've gotten used to bad press -
particularly from the 'serious' press. Duran Duran has never
really had good press and neither have I. It would be nice if we do
a piece of work that gets rave reviews, but having gotten used to
living without it I guess I can get by!”

sounds like the guy that played the Goblin King in the movie The Labyrinth." She was referring
to David Bowie.I was wondering if you've ever been compared to Bowie before, and how does
that feel to get that comparison? Lisa
JT SEZ: “I'm sure David Bowie would be very happy to know that
he's recognized for his role in Labyrinth! Yeah, I've been
compared... as a singer he's probably the biggest influence that
I've had - and as a writer too. So, yeah, there's bound to be
similarities”
conceiving a song!
[posted4/3/2002U.S.A.]
John, great of course about the reunion - even better that you guys seem to be having fun doing
it! Just wondering if you can maybe shed some light on how the songs get written or conceived?
Do you guys jam a lot to come up with new tracks, or does maybe one band member walk into
the studio one day whistling a melody that everyone sort of picks up on?
A combination? Mark
JT says: “We've tried to stick pretty close to the old blueprint...
which largely would come out of the band jamming. We'd set up
the gear and we play. We'd find a groove that we like, maybe
Nick and Andy then find some chords that they like, that works
with what we're doing, then Simon's pitching around for melodic
and lyrical ideas. It's kind of how most of the material we did
before was written. That's how we've been doing it so far, and it's
working.”

Depeche Mode. Dave's just got a great style as a singer.

This is for John. In your whole life, since childhood to now, who's been the person who has
inspired you the most a) as a musician, b) as an actor, c) as a man (father, husband, etc.) Dara
JT: “Well the two figures that loom the largest in my musical
upbringing are John Lennon and the Beatles, but John in
particular, and Bowie. Their achievements just set the pace for
what is possible for somebody like me... and they're tough acts to
follow. As an actor, I really never thought about acting to the
extent that there is an actor out there who really influenced me.
As a man... maybe Winston Churchill.”

My question is for any Duran member who would like to answer......What do you consider the
best gig Duran Duran has ever played....the one that came closest to perfection musically and
gave the most satisfaction. b.j.
JT: “You know it's funny, BJ, because we played a show on the
Wedding Album tour at the Ahoy in Rotterdam, and we were
opening with “Too Much Information.” The feeling I had was that
this was the greatest gig we've ever played, and after about three
songs Simon's voice gave in, and we had to leave the stage! We
came back on and our back-up singer, Lamya, sang “Come
Undone” and we did a couple of other things. It was a strange
thing, for about fifteen minutes there we were a great rock and
roll band. That comes to mind immediately, that experience, but
no sooner were we there that we had gone”

Hi Katy, I'm Denny from NY and nice site by the way. I'm a big DD fan, but I have a
controversial question for Mr. John Taylor: are you eating your words for that quote you made
in 1998 that the very idea of a Duran Duran reunion would be laughable? here's a piece of that
article to help refreshyour memory: "Still, he laughs at the idea of rejoining Duran Duran,
which is working on a new album. "That's like sleeping with your ex-wife," Taylor said. "In the
best-case scenario, if they offered enormous amounts of money, itwould have to be [like the
Eagles'] Hell Freezes Over tour. "It's like the KISS tour. Do you really want to go there? That's
what you do when you have nothing else left in your life. It's a statement of failure. Is that
anything less than aparody, to taint your own legend?"
JT SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT: “My simple answer would be,
that if I have learnt one thing of late, it is that you can always be

This question is for John. I have the glossy "Duran in Japan" pictorial magazine that was
released in 1983, and it contains pictures taken of John and Roger doing a promotional visit to
Japan. A few pictures show humorous caricatures that he has drawn of Roger and himself. My
question is, have you ever exploited this talent in a commercial sense? Has your artwork ever

“Have you ever seen Ronnie Wood's caricatures? Well, all of my
caricatures look like Ronnie Wood's caricatures of himself for
some reason. They all look like a cross between Daffy Duck and
Ronnie Wood! So, no, I never really thought about exploiting
this particular talent of mine, but who knows?”

I have a question for John. Has the band ever had any other high profile artists saying they are
an influence? I have always felt Michael Jackson's videos from 84 had a Duran touch about
them. Mathew
JT SAYS: “Around about that time actually ('84), Michael
Jackson got in touch with us and wanted to work with us.
Looking back on that now, we really should have made that
happen, but things were going so crazy for us at the time we
couldn't quite get on the same page.”
how does JT relax?
[posted1/30/2002U.S.A.]
This is for John. I can only imagine how wonderful it must have been to have achieved fame
and fortune at a young age. I would suspect you've had your fair share of pampering along the
way. I wonder, in your life today, what you consider to be a great luxury or 'pampering' (of
sorts). What is something really special and relaxing for you? Robin
JOHN SAYS “Well, a good meal, a good book... not necessarily
in that order.”

What do you appreciate most in a woman, an intellectual mind or just looks? Adrianna
“Well, everything - an intellectual mind is important and looks
are important. Looks are an expression of what's going on inside.
I appreciate the same things in a woman as I do in a man really...
honesty, sense of humor, intelligence, and a good sense of....

timing is everything
[posted1/2/2002U.S.A.]
Sorry to ask another DD reunion, but until a lengthy magazine article comes out, there are so
many unknowns I have to find out. First of all, WHY? No complaints mind you, but it seemed
the 5 would never want to get back, especially (but w/no animosity) you John, with your solo
music and film career; and Roger's aversion to the potential high profile he may be having
again. I wondered if Simon and Nick would pack it in due to frustration with labels, and maybe
they would feel it had "run its course" then this happens. It must have been being discussed for
awhile. So when did you all say "lets do this !" I also hope to hear some more or your "upfront
bass playing" prominent on the early albums. You have always been my main bass influence!
Steve
JT says “It really is all about timing, and come fall of last year
each one of us independently had been thinking that it would be
something they'd like to do... after having the experiences that
we've had. You've got to remember, that band never made a bad
record - in my opinion anyway - so it's very tempting to go back
and see what we can do, all this time later... and it's very
interesting.”

John - How do you stay looking so young? Out of all the 80s famous pin ups you have matured
and aged perfectly. They say men get better with age, but you top the list. What is your
secret?! (-Beth)
“I don't know if there's any secrets with me actually. I gave up
drinking and drugging a few years back, I try to eat well, I try to
stay fit and I try not to tell lies and keep secrets. Hopefully that
keeps me looking open. I try to treat people decently... Ii think if
there's a reason, that's it.... oh, and good genes... I like a good

Now that everyone has gotten to know each other again, who would win the award for most
changed and most unchanged and why? -Awaiting with eageranticipation...Tina
NICK DECIDED TO TAKE ON THIS ONE: "Actually, I think everybody is
surprisingly consistant with both their personalitiesand working methods.
I guess John would win the prize for most changed in lifestyle as
he has lived in California for some years."
great bass player
[posted11/20/2001U.S.A.]
hey John - Usually people don't ask you a lot about your bass playing, when it is the center
point of your career. Regarding that, you've always said you didn't have a lot of musical
education before DD's first album came out. But basslines such as the ones in the Rio album are
expected from full trained musicians. I'm wondering how did you become such a great bass
player in less than 5 or 6 years. Did you followed some technique or had a teacher, or was it you
alone practicing? -Picazzo Giles
“I guess it's all about technique really. As a bass player it's
really been instinctive. I started honing in on bass players that I
liked - mostly disco bass lines, Chic basslines. I found them quite
easy to copy. I just went with it. Being in a working band you
play everyday anyway. I never felt the need to practice, I'm not
big on practicing. If you're in a band and the band is working
then that should be enough practice.”
defining time
[posted11/16/2001U.S.A.]
This is for John - Do you sometimes feel as though certain songs will always leave you frozen
in time and some songs are symbols of our (you, your family, friends and fans') journey growing
up together? Just know that you made growing up in the 80's/90's/00's so exciting and you
continue to create memorable snapshots in time for all of us to enjoy forever. -Elizabeth
“Well obviously over time I've come to realize that some of my
music, especially the Duran Duran music, has really defined a
time and place for people - no less for me. Just in the same way
that music I grew up to has defined that time and place. It's also
nice if you can reconnect with music later on and it redefines a
moment. The first time you hear a song that makes an impact on
you is obviously going to be the most significant time. As I was
putting together a compilation CD [of solo material], I started to
realize that so much of the material I had written and recorded
over the last five years became such a symbol of a time and place
for that period.”
re-connecting
[posted11/13/2001U.S.A.]
This is for John - about the reunion: It has been a long time. WOW! I'm just as excited as
anyone that you've made the decision to reunite and record once again. My question is, "What
was it like working with people you used to be quite connected with and then working with them
again after many years? Any first impressions?" -Kathlynn
“Well so far it's been challenging, inspiring... never a dull
moment! You really don't know what's going to happen next.
Everybody's gone through so many changes, but it's great. It's
really good to get back. You know, it's been a long time since I
worked with Roger and a long time since I worked with Andy,
and it's good to get back with them. It's great to be playing with
Roger again.”
jt on playing MSG
[posted11/1/2001U.S.A.]
John, Back in DD's prime around 83-85, when on tour and the curtains open say at Wembley or
Madison Square Garden, what was going through your mind at that moment of seeing thousands
screaming to see you perform? -Ross
“Those are the moments that I lived for - I still do actually. The
moment when the lights go down, and the artist takes control.
And obviously doing it on the level of Madison Square Gardens
was almost overwhelming, where we were still babies as
performers. But tremendous fun, nothing
quite like it that I know.
JT's best drummer
[posted11/1/2001U.S.A.]
This is for John - Of all the drummers you've played with while being in Duran Duran, Roger
Taylor seems to be the one that synched up the best with you. Why so? -Nelson
“I synched up with Roger because I was really starting out as a
bass player when he joined the band. Between the two of us we
evolved the style together. I have played with some great players,
but Roger and I sort of grew up together, so it's a good fit and it
feels comfortable.”
jt's bass preferences
[posted10/31/2001U.S.A.]
What sort of basses does John use or prefer? I've been considering starting to learn how to play
bass and I figured I should get advice from the pro on it! Thanks! -Katie
“I use all different kinds of basses. I started off with the Aria, I
was using that a lot, then I went to the Factor - the Kubiki. I used
a Steinberger for a while then I got into the Les Paul bass. I've
got a fretless (Fender) that I've not used very much but I'm going
to be using on the next Duran sessions. I just got a Status, an
English bass, that's a lot of fun to play. I think I'm going to be
using that a lot. I also have a Fender Precision that is a beautiful
example of that particular guitar. I'm pretty open-minded. I like
to have a rapport with a bass. It's a pretty big thing when you
think you're going to travel the world with an instrument, and
that you're going to be playing it night after night. When a new
bass comes into my life I tend to look at it for a while, and I get to
know it like you might get to know a wild animal... very gently.
It's a very sensitive relationship. I've also been playing the Music
Man that used to belong to Bernard Edwards on the new Duran
recordings - obviously that's a big deal for me to be playing that
guitar, and it sounds great!”
describe yer bandmates!

I have a question for Simon. Whenever I listen to Duran Duran or whenever I see them on
magazines or TV, I feel like I'm listening or seeing my loved ones, someone I have always
known in my life. Actually I cannot say I know each meber's character very well. Simon can
you describe your collegues' (the originl five members') charcter with three adjectives each.
Don't forget to describe yourself and Warren!Lots of love. Alessandra
"Nick - arty, witty, child(ish/like). John - romantic, paranoid,
aspiring.
Roger - loyal, brave, humble. Andy - feisty, smart, wry. Simon
- mystery flavoured tart. Warren - penis obsessed creative."

hi Katy, if u dont mind iґd like to know a few things, - in the song The Flame (Arcadia) whoґs
the girl who says at the begining of the song "vengo de la tierra del fuego ten cuidado cuando
llamas mi nombre", i always wanted to know her name. And, request for simon, is it true that u
wrote " buried in the sand" and it was dedicated to john? i know u r together now ( thanks for
that) but if u dont mind i would like to know why did u dedicate that song to him when u always
said, since he left the band, that u would like to get john back cos u miss him, my name is
gustavo, thank u for being so grand.
HI GUSTAVO, THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION. VIOLETTA SANCHEZ DID THE
SPANISH OPENING PART OF THE SONG "THE FLAME." SHE IS ALSO THE
MODEL FOR THE DRAWINF OF THE WOMAN ON THE FRONT COVER OF THE
ALBUM - THE DRAWING OF HER DONE BY TONY VIRAMONTES. BY THE

This is a question for the Duran Duran rhythm section, first for John, after playing with
different drummers over the years, how does it feel to play with Roger again? And for Roger,
did playing with John again take some getting used to, or was it still familiar to you? Like riding
a bike??
WELL, I WASN'T ABLE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH JT, BUT THIS IS
WHAT
ROGER HAD TO SAY: "Playing with John again was like
putting on an old pair of socks again-they were very familiar and
fit beautifully

rockers
[posted7/20/2001U.S.A.]
A long, long time ago when my friends and I were around 14, we used to spend many a long
Saturday afternoon in a record shop (now no longer in existence) called Rockers in Hurst Street
in Birmingham. We did this week in week out in the hope that any member of Duran Duran
would turn up. Could one of the guys put us out of our misery and let us know whether they ever
did frequent this shop in 1981/2? Or was it just a rumour amongst Durannies of the time?
Thanks, Lucy
YES ABSOLUTELY. BOTH MIKE AND GARETH, WHO RAN THE SHOP, WERE
PERSONAL FRIENDS OF NICK AND JOHN.

This question is for John. Do you have more of a desire to perform in movies or is your main
priority music and hopefully more touring? What direction are you leaning more towards?
-Katie
“I had a lot of fun in the last six months of 2000 with movies, but
I also had a lot of fun in the first six months of last year playing
live. I like doing it all really. In these last few years since I left
Duran I've made a lot of music, done a lot of CDs, put a lot of
different versions of my band Terroristen together, done a lot of
shows. So I'm quite enjoying the acting process, and I want to
work on that and spend more time on that, but believe me, I'm
working on music all the time. -JT”
dd is bigger than all of us!
[posted7/8/2001U.S.A.]
John, do you resent the fact that it seems nearly impossible to escape the DD days? From what
I have seen, your talents stand alone, however, it seems that there is always the explanation of
former DD member, John Taylor. For example, in the 'Strange Frequency' promos there is a
reference to DD's John Taylor and in the VH1 Top 10 Countdown there is DD reference. I
would hate it! -Melissa
“Melissa, you don't know that you'd hate it. It's a mixed blessing
is all I can tell you. Being in a band that was as well loved as
Duran Duran, you're probably never going to get away from it so
you shouldn't try. And I've given up trying really. It's just a part
of me, a part of who I am and it always will be. But I'm not going
to let it get in the way of who I am. -JT”
jt's other band ?
[posted7/8/2001U.S.A.]
Someone had asked Nick if he could have been in another band, besides Duran Duran, what band
would it have been? He said The Velvet Underground. I was just curious what band John would
pick. -Kristin
“The first band that came to mind is the Rolling Stones -
especially to be one of the surviving members. Just the amount
of changes that they've seen and the amount of experiences that
they've had, I don't think any band can compare to that really.
There's always been something very glamorous and dangerous
about being in the Rolling Stones. So that's the band I'd pick. -JT”
some words from j.t.
[posted7/8/2001U.S.A.]
John, Now that Duran Duran will be heading back into the studio to record new material, do you
feel it will be easier or more difficult to put forth new ideas and concepts especially since you
(John) and Andy have had experience with solo projects using a much different musicaldirection
than what Duran Duran (past or present) has presented in the past? -Tina
“I think everybody in the band realizes that it's a democracy and
everybody's got great ideas. We all just have to work together
and listen to each other. Duran Duran has always been about
making everybody's ideas work. I don't think it really matters
that my experience is any different to Nick's or Roger's or
whatever. We all just come with our own inspiration and
experience and throw it into the pot and see what happens. -JT”
